Albany Tech to Hold Spring Commencement Ceremony Friday

May 5, 2011 - Albany Technical College will hold its Spring Commencement Ceremony for fall and winter graduates on Friday, May 6, 2011, at 7 p.m. at the Albany Civic Center. Preceding the ceremony, a reception will be held from 5pm to 6:45pm in the Meeting Room at the Civic Center.

More than 60 students will be eligible to receive their associate degrees; more than 500 diplomas; and more than 50 technical certificates of credit. In addition, more than 100 students will be eligible to receive their GED’s. Several of these students will also be recognized in the program for outstanding achievements and contributions in club organizations, student organizations, and academic excellence, which includes President’s List, scholarships, and other affiliations.

The guest speaker for the evening ceremony will be Dean Alford, President and CEO of Allied Energy Services and Board Chairman for the Technical College System of Georgia.

Nationally known for his entrepreneurship and strategic planning expertise, Dean Alford is currently responsible for over $5 billion of energy projects in Central and North America. He also services as co-chair of the Pine 2 Energy Coalition. Alford has been personally responsible for the formation of six startup companies and has published numerous articles and lectures throughout the United States and Canada on the subject of energy policy and utility issues.

Prior to joining Allied, Alford was President and CEO of A&C Enercom, a full-service utility consulting firm that employed over 700 people with 31 offices nationwide. He founded A&C Enercom in 1978 and it grew to be one of the most respected utility service companies in the utility industry. He has also served as consultant to the U.S. Congressional Office of Technology Assessment on energy policy issues.

Alford earned his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Georgia Tech. He is very involved in several educational initiatives. From September 2003 to December 2006, he served as a member of the State Board of Education for the State of Georgia. In 2004, former Governor Perdue asked Alford to Chair the Governor’s Education Finance Task Force. The Task Force has been charged with the task of developing a new funding formula for the K-12 system of Georgia. Alford has also been serving as the Board Chairman for the Technical College System of Georgia’s board of directors.
