Albany Tech to Hold Fall Commencement Ceremony Friday

September 15, 2011 - Albany Technical College will hold its Fall Commencement Ceremony for spring and summer graduates on Friday, September 16, 2011, at 7 p.m. at the Albany Civic Center. Preceding the ceremony, a reception will be held from 5pm to 6:45pm in the Meeting Room at the Civic Center.

Over 100 students will be eligible to receive their associate degrees; more than 500 diplomas; and more than 150 technical certificates of credit. In addition, more than 100 students will be eligible to receive their GED’s. Several of these students will also be recognized in the program for outstanding achievements and contributions in club organizations, student organizations, and academic excellence, which includes President’s List, scholarships, and other affiliations.

The guest speaker for the evening ceremony will be Joel Wernick, President and Chief Executive Office for Phoebe Putney Health System.

Since assuming the leadership of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in July 1988, Wernick has led several expansions to benefit the health status of all Southwest Georgians. Under his leadership, Phoebe has doubled its employee ranks to more than 3,800 today and is not the region’s largest employer. Under Wernick’s 20 years of leadership, Phoebe has garnered attention in the state and nation.

Wernick came to Albany from Pensacola, Fla., where for seven years he served as the vice president of operations for Baptist Regional Health Services. He received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas and a master’s degree in hospital administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was awarded the Foster G. McGaw scholarship for academic excellence and leadership potential in the area of healthcare administration.
