Albany Technical College to Host CDL Day on October 21. Recruiting event will connect prospective students with CDL instructors and trucking industry employers
ALBANY, GA – Albany Technical College will host CDL Day on Wednesday, October 21, at 10 a.m. at the Commercial Truck Driving Range on the Albany Technical College campus. The event is designed for individuals interested in beginning a career in commercial truck driving and will provide an opportunity to learn about training at Albany Tech while meeting representatives from trucking companies seeking qualified drivers.
CDL Day will bring prospective students, Albany Technical College Commercial Truck Driving instructors, and transportation industry employers together at the college’s training range. Visitors will have an opportunity to see where students receive hands-on training, talk with instructors about the program, learn about enrollment requirements, and speak directly with employers about career opportunities in the trucking industry.
Participating trucking companies are expected to include May Trucking, Warner, PTI, Benny Whitehead, McElroy, Beverage South, Kenny Truck & Trailer Repair, and Worldwide Equipment.
“This gives someone who is considering commercial truck driving an opportunity to see the training environment, meet the instructors who will work with them, and talk directly with companies that employ CDL drivers,” said Etris Smith, Chair/Instructor of Commercial Truck Driving at Albany Technical College. “They can see the connection between what they will learn here on the range and the career opportunities available after completing their training.”
Albany Technical College’s Commercial Truck Driving Technical Certificate of Credit provides training in commercial truck operations, including classroom instruction, range work, vehicle operation, and advanced driving skills under actual road conditions. The nine-credit program prepares students for the Georgia CDL Skills Exam.
Prospective students must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Georgia driver’s license. A high school diploma or GED is not required for admission to the Commercial Truck Driving program. Additional requirements apply before students can be accepted and registered for CDL classes, including required driving records, permits, physical examinations, and other documentation.
Commercial Truck Driving is also among the programs eligible for the HOPE Career Grant for qualifying Georgia students, providing an additional resource for individuals interested in training for an in-demand career.
“CDL Day is really about showing prospective students the complete picture,” Smith said. “They can talk to us about the training and then talk to employers about what happens after the training. We want people to leave knowing what steps they need to take to get started.”
