Albany Technical College Opens New Wellness Center with Ribbon Cutting Celebration

Albany, Georgia – Albany Technical College will officially open its new Wellness Center, located in Room 103 of the Freedom Hall Building, with a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the occasion, Wednesday August 27, at 11:00 a.m. The new facility supports the college’s commitment to student wellness by promoting a holistic balance of mind, body, and spirit.

Open to students Monday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Fridays from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., the Wellness Center includes a fully operational gym and space for fitness and wellness classes, including Line Dance, Yoga, Step Aerobics, and more. These offerings are designed to reduce stress, encourage movement, and foster a greater sense of balance among students navigating academic and personal demands.

The center is part of the Student Wellness: Mental, Academic, and Physical Preparedness (M.A.P.P.) Project, funded by a Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) grant. Through this initiative, Albany Technical College is expanding support services to improve student well-being and long-term success.

“This Wellness Center reflects our belief that students perform best when their whole selves are supported,” said Lashea Dancer, Project Director of Student Wellness. “We’ve created a space that encourages physical fitness, emotional balance, and academic focus—all essential ingredients for student success.”

The M.A.P.P. initiative aims to increase:

  • Awareness and access to health and wellness services
  • Academic success, persistence, and graduation in Allied Health programs
  • Tutoring engagement in occupational courses
  • Enrollment and completion among African American males in healthcare fields
  • First-term success and continued enrollment for first-generation students

The ribbon cutting is a milestone in Albany Tech’s continued efforts to build supportive environments that meet students where they are—academically, mentally, and physically.

In addition to the Wellness Center, a walking trail system is also in development on Albany Tech’s campus. The proposed trails—planned as both a 1.2-mile and a .7-mile loop—will offer additional space for outdoor movement and reflection. Once completed, the walking trails will complement the Wellness Center’s offerings and further encourage students to engage in daily physical activity.
